In short: RoadNotes has no account and no servers. Your recordings are transcribed on your iPhone and deleted right after, and your notes stay on your device. We don't collect, see or sell any of your data.
Who we are
RoadNotes is an iPhone and CarPlay app made by Amit Nadir ("we", "us"). You can reach us at amitnadir@gmail.com.
Recordings
- RoadNotes uses the microphone only while a note is being recorded: from when you open RoadNotes in CarPlay (it starts listening right away), tap Start a new note, or ask Siri, until you stop or go quiet. There is no wake word and no background listening.
- Each recording is saved to a temporary file on your iPhone, transcribed there, and the audio file is deleted as soon as transcription finishes. Audio is never uploaded.
Transcription and summaries
- Speech is turned into text on your iPhone by an open-source speech model (Whisper, run through WhisperKit).
- The first time you record, RoadNotes downloads that speech model from Hugging Face (huggingface.co). This download contains no audio or personal content; like any web request, it reveals your device's IP address to the server that hosts the file.
- If you turn on Summarize with Apple Intelligence, summaries and action items are created by Apple's on-device model. RoadNotes does not send your notes to Apple or anyone else for this.
- Reading notes aloud uses the speech voices built into iOS, on the device.
Your notes
- Transcripts, summaries and action items are stored only in RoadNotes' storage on your iPhone. We have no copy and no way to access them.
- Your notes may be included in your iPhone's own backups (iCloud Backup or a computer backup), which are controlled by you and Apple.
- You can delete any note by swiping it. Deleting the app deletes all notes.
- Sharing a note sends it only where you choose, through the iOS share sheet.
Purchases and the free trial
- Purchases are handled entirely by Apple. We never receive your name, email address or payment details.
- RoadNotes asks the App Store whether you own the lifetime unlock, and when your Apple Account first downloaded the app, so the 10-day trial can't be restarted.
- The date you first opened RoadNotes is stored in your iPhone's keychain for the same reason. It stays on your device.
What we don't do
- No account or sign-in.
- No analytics, advertising or tracking SDKs, and no tracking across apps or websites.
- No selling or sharing of personal data, because we don't collect any.
Permissions
Microphone is needed to record notes. Siri is used only if you set up the RoadNotes shortcuts. You can turn either off at any time in the iOS Settings app.
Children
RoadNotes is not directed at children under 13, and it doesn't knowingly collect information from anyone.
Changes
If RoadNotes ever changes how it handles data, we'll update this page and the effective date above before the change takes effect.
